Using the FTP protocol is a very good idea when wanting to back up files and folders and also share your data with other people. The problem is that most FTP services offer a limited available space and transfer speed, while other services which don't have these limits cost a lot of money. To avoid these situations, you could install a FTP server into your computer and turn your PC into a complex and inexpensive file server.

For this to be possible, you could just install and use FTPShell Server. This Windows program allows you to run your own FTP server and configure access levels for each user. After the program has been installed and launched, you will first need to configure some settings regarding the FTP server, like the port, home folder and permissions.

You can configure several FTP accounts for each user and set up different access levels for each of them. For example, you can configure a user account only to be able to view files stored on the FTP server but not to modify them or vice-versa. An unlimited number of FTP accounts can be defined in FTPShell Server and the program can even be configured to use the existing Windows account to act as FTP login credentials. The FTP server can be configured to automatically start when Windows starts or to be turned on manually.

Aditionally, you can view a program log at any moment, containing the complete program operations, thus allowing you to spot any possible error.

Pros

It allows you to configure several user accounts and access levels to the FTP server. What's more, you can configure the server to automatically start together with Windows. Furthermore, you can view a program log at any moment.

Cons

Setting up all the server's options may be a bit difficult for some users. Using FTPShell Server you can easily run your own FTP server and set up different access levels for each user.
